Earthlight is a small oil painting, just 4 by 6 inches, that takes a close look at the Moon’s surface. The foreground reveals a rugged terrain with cratered indentations and subtle variations in gray, punctuated by deep shadows that give shape to the landscape. Beyond this textured ground, Earth appears in striking blues and whites, its swirling atmosphere a vivid contrast against the stillness of the lunar horizon. The work grew from a photo shared by Artemis astronauts, and in creating it I focused on the quiet tension between the barren lunar surface and the dynamic life of our planet seen from afar. Working at this scale gave me a chance to explore careful shifts in tone and texture, capturing that moment of solitary observation that space inspires.
